Data retention policy

Effective 2026-11-02. Part of our privacy policy. Questions: [email protected].

Why we keep data

We keep a child's information only to run Teach Me for that family: to pick the next problems, show progress to the parent and keep the account signed in. We do not keep it for advertising, for selling, or to build profiles of children. When it is no longer needed for that, we delete it.

How long each kind of data is kept

DataKept until
The account: email, password and PIN (one-way hashes only), consent recordsThe parent or student deletes the account, or 12 months with no sign-in
Each child's first name, grade, picture choice, rewards and practice progressThe child is removed, the account is deleted, or 12 months with no sign-in
School test results (per-skill counts, date, title)The test is removed, the child is removed or the account is deleted
School test photosNever stored. Sent to the AI to be read, then discarded.
Activity log ("opened the app", "finished a day"), AI hint log, feedback2 years, or sooner if the account is deleted
Saved AI hint text (the problem and the hint, never who asked)14 days
AI use counts per family per monthThe account is deleted
Failed sign-in records and network address used for rate limits2 days
Password reset linksOnce used, or 1 day after they expire
The operator's copies of sign-up notices and weekly summaries (emails of parents and students only)12 months

Inactive accounts

An account nobody signs in to for 11 months gets a warning email. If nobody signs in within 30 days after that, the account and everything in it are deleted. An account without an email address is deleted after 12 months with no sign-in. This runs automatically every day.

Deleting on request

Backups and service providers

Cloudflare, which runs our database, keeps restore points for a limited time (up to 30 days). A deleted record is gone from them once that window passes. We do not keep other copies or our own server logs. Our service providers keep data only as their terms allow and only to provide their service: see the list in the privacy policy.

Teach Me 1600 archive

Teach Me 1600 accounts moved into Teach Me on 2026-10-26. The old Teach Me 1600 database is kept read-only as an archive until that site is shut down, and no later than 2027-10-26. A former Teach Me 1600 student can ask us to delete their archived record at any time by email.
